One bowl, several very different specs

The City Bowl's constituent suburbs — Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, Higgovale, Vredehoek, Bo-Kaap and Devil's Peak Estate among them — share the same amphitheatre geography but not the same window brief. A lower-Bowl apartment near the foreshore, an original Victorian terrace mid-slope, and an architect-renovated glass box on the upper stands each want a different answer, sometimes on the same street: a sunscreen roller that cuts the glare without closing off the view, timber venetian blinds inside an old sash reveal, a ceiling-recessed system where the glass runs floor to ceiling. We measure each opening on its own terms rather than apply one spec across the bowl.

The Cape Doctor, felt hardest right here

The "Cape Doctor" south-easter is Cape Town's defining wind — strong and persistent from roughly October to March — and it's extra strong precisely in the City Bowl, where the air is squeezed between the sea and the surrounding mountains and accelerates through the funnel. Gusts through Table Bay have been recorded well into storm territory. That's the reason every exterior product we fit across the Bowl, wherever the address, carries a genuine wind rating.

Heritage rules that follow the bowl, not one suburb

A structure over 60 years old anywhere in South Africa needs a Heritage Western Cape permit before its exterior is altered, and the City Bowl carries a formal Heritage Protection Overlay Zone covering parts of it, including Tamboerskloof and lower Oranjezicht, with Bo-Kaap gazetted into its own overlay. We treat that as a standing question on any pre-1960s Bowl address, not just the well-known heritage streets.
